Ulvila

Ulvila’s lively and multidimensional present is built on a long and fascinating history. This history is told by its old buildings, a newly-found treasure cache dating from the 14th century and traditional folklore. Special museums shed light on special areas from leather and iron manufacturing to peasant culture. Tourist will enjoy both the undisturbed natural peace and the vibrant, present-day way of life.

First there were the hanseatic merchants…
The economic potential of the Kokemäenjoki outfall was first realised by the hanseatic merchants. Ulvila was granted town rights in 1365 by Albert, Duke of Mecklenburg. This long tradition can be detected in the medieval church of St Olaus, during the Hanseatic Fair, the St. Olaus' Festival and during the week of old music. The transition from past to present is smooth in the Kokemäenjoki landscapes viewed from the M/S Charlotta (www.porinvesibussit.com) or in a traditional church boat.

Friitala design, handicrafts and the history of leather manufacturing
You can become familiar with the latest trends in leather and suede fashion by visiting the factory outlet of Friitala Fashion. The Friitala Leather Museum, the biggest leather museum in Scandinavia, illuminates the history of the industry with its changing exhibitions and thematic exhibitions. You will find unique candles and other giftware in Maria Drockila's candle workshop, and finish your tour by eating well at Café Hellmann.

Leineperi - the iron works of the happy factory own
The smith's forge, the mill, the impressive furnace, the old idyllic bakery building, Savipakari, and numerous shops selling handicrafts and art create an exceptional atmosphere in an original milieu. The Leineperi Ruukki area is one of the best conserved and most complete iron works areas in Finland. What was everyday life like in the area in 1895? Who was the happy factory owner? Become familiar with the colourful history and events of the village with local guides, more information (in Finnish) on: www.leineperinruukki.fi

Joutsijärvi – wilderness atmosphere in the heart of Satakunta
The 27-kilometer long Joutsijärvi hiking route winds round the beautiful Joutsijärvi Lake. This route is excellent for trips that last only overnight or for a weekend. The rest areas along the route, its log shelters and abandoned houses create a real feeling of the wilderness.
