Pearls of culture and experiences of nature on the squirrel hunting grounds of bishops Noormarkku, located north of Pori, is a vibrant and youthful municipality built around the dignified and historical iron works area. Excellent fishing and hunting grounds attracted the first settlers to Noormarkku before the 15th century. The municipality’s coat of arms portrays a squirrel sitting on an anvil, reminiscent of the municipality’s history: it was once the squirrel hunting ground of ancient bishops. The anvil refers to the golden age of the iron works when the sound of smiths’ hammers reached the whole village. General-adjutant, Constantin de Carnall, was granted permission to found the iron works in 1806. Later on, nearly every peasant in Northern Satakunta brought their tar, coal and iron junk to manufacturer Antti Ahlström’s factory. One of Finland’s first electricity generating plants exploited the stream of Makkarakoski as early as 1896.
