Historical sights: Pori

The past and present meet in Pori: history and folklore are presented by numerous museums. The local architectural tradition is conserved and presented e.g. by Renovation Centre Toivo and Korsman's house. These cherished buildings tell us their own stories of past times.

The Junnelius palace
pori kaupungintalo
This building, also known as the Junnelius palace, was built in 1895. The builders of this Venetian-style renaissance palace were Counsellor Robert Junnelius and Consul Hugo Rosenlew. The building was designed by architect August Krook.

The City of Pori purchased the Junnelius palace in 1962. In 1991, an extensive renovation of the building was started. This aims at preserving a part of Pori's most valuable architectural heritage for the generations to come.

Visits to the town hall upon request: tel. +358 (0)2 621 1100. NB! The building will not be open to the public in 2007, due to its renovation.

The old courthouse
porin raatihuone
The old courthouse, designed by architect C.L. Engel in 1831, is the most elegant building in Pori. It was inaugurated on 18 December 1841, representing the city and the authorities. The text on the building's facade, "Curia Arctopolis", translates as "the meeting room of the City of the Bear".

In the beginning, the court assembled in the building but from 1963 onwards, the building was solely used by the judiciary system. After the new Court House was completed in 1980, the old courthouse was emptied. Renovation on the building was begun in November 1983 and completed in the summer of 1991. Nowadays, the building houses the Consumer Advice Centre and the Restaurant Raatihuoneen Kellari.

Visits to the old court house hall upon request: tel. +358 (0)2 621 1100.

Stone house blocks by the river
rakennuskulttuuritalo toivo
The stone house blocks located by the river in Eteläranta (the southern bank) form a spectacular sight that is known nation-wide, mainly having been built after the great fire of 1852, in the Neo-Renaissance style.

Renovation Centre Toivo
rakennuskulttuuritalo toivo
In Renovation Centre Toivo, those who own old houses are provided with information on how to renovate them so that their natural characteristics are conserved. Skilful renovation conserves the spirit of the house. The know-how provided by Toivo is also accessible to those building new houses and interested in traditional construction methods.

Renovation Centre Toivo was founded by Satakunta Museum. Its name is based on the juice factory named Toivo which operated from the premises between the wars. The main building is an old residential building made of timber, the first parts of which were already built in 1810. The building has been extended many times and was originally completed in 1907.

Renovation Centre Toivo also has a databank where additional information on various materials and their sellers, experts in traditional building and detailed instructions can be obtained. This database of instructions, recipes and safety information is being continuously updated. There is also a small building material shop in Toivo, where you will find rare but essential materials for renovating old houses. Further information on Renovation CentreToivo

Korsman's House
pori korsmanin talo
This building was most likely built in 1874, but was renovated by engineer Konstantin Korsman in 1896, when it was given its present exteriors. The premises are used both for educational purposes and exhibitions.

The two rooms and kitchen at the southern end of Korsman's house were renovated in 1999, mainly as premises used for educating young people in their cultural heritage. Time in Korsman’s house has stopped in 1951. The aim is to show how people used to live in Pori. You can also handle all the objects in the house!

Korsman's house is also open to the public during special occasions, in the summer and upon request. Coffee and pastries can be purchased (€1). Otherwise, access to Korsman's house is free of charge. Further information on Korsman's house

The Juselius Mausoleum
-
The Juselius Mausoleum is situated by Maantienkatu, in the Käppärä cemetery. F.A. Juselius, a mining counsellor, had the mausoleum built to commemorate the death of his 11-year-old daughter, Sigrid. The mausoleum was designed by a famous church architect, Josef Stenbäck, and the building was finished in 1903.

The original frescos, painted by the artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela, were later destroyed. The wall paintings seen today are the work of artist Jorma Gallen-Kallela, who painted them in his father's style.

The Mausoleum is open to the public from 1 May to 31 August every day from noon to 3 p.m., from 1 September to 30 April on Sundays from noon to 2 p.m. Reservations, tel. +358 (0)2 623 8746
