Architectural sights: Pori

The old, magnificently conserved stone house blocks in Pori tell their own stories of the past. The Junnelius palace, the town hall, Pori City theatre and the Pori Art Museum are prime examples of the architectural masterpieces in Pori.

The Junnelius palace
pori kaupungintalo
This building, also known as the Junnelius palace, was built in 1895. The builders of this Venetian-style renaissance palace were Counsellor Robert Junnelius and Consul Hugo Rosenlew. The building was designed by architect August Krook.

The City of Pori purchased the Junnelius palace in 1962. In 1991, an extensive renovation of the building was started. This aims at preserving a part of Pori's most valuable architectural heritage for the generations to come.

Visits to the town hall upon request: tel. +358 (0)2 621 1100. NB! The building will not be open to the public in 2007, due to its renovation.

The Pori City Theatre

The Pori Theatre building was completed at the end of 1884. It was designed by a Swedish architect called Johan Erik Stenberg, and was built in the Neo-Renaissance style, the trend at the time. The masterpieces in this style are public buildings, often located next to a market square or a park - just like the theatre in Pori. Nowadays, the main stage seats 313 persons (of which 79 seats are on the balcony). The restaurant located in the building was finished first and inaugurated on 3 November 1884.

The old courthouse
porin raatihuone
The old courthouse, designed by architect C.L. Engel in 1831, is the most elegant building in Pori. It was inaugurated on 18 December 1841, representing the city and the authorities. The text on the building's facade, "Curia Arctopolis", translates as "the meeting room of the City of the Bear".

In the beginning, the court assembled in the building but from 1963 onwards, the building was solely used by the judiciary system. After the new Court House was completed in 1980, the old courthouse was emptied. Renovation on the building was begun in November 1983 and completed in the summer of 1991. Nowadays, the building houses the Consumer Advice Centre and the Restaurant Raatihuoneen Kellari.

The Juselius Mausoleum
-
The Juselius Mausoleum is situated by Maantienkatu, in the Käppärä cemetery. F.A. Juselius, a mining counsellor, had the mausoleum built to commemorate the death of his 11-year-old daughter, Sigrid. The mausoleum was designed by a famous church architect, Josef Stenbäck, and the building was finished in 1903.

The original frescos, painted by the artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela, were later destroyed. The wall paintings seen today are the work of artist Jorma Gallen-Kallela, who painted them in his father's style.

The Mausoleum is open to the public from 1 May to 31 August every day from noon to 3 p.m., from 1 September to 30 April on Sundays from noon to 2 p.m. Reservations, tel. +358 (0)2 623 8746
